Thickness Measurement
An easy way of measuring the thickness materials is to use an ultrasonic thickness gauge, sometimes called a wall thickness gauge. Sound travels relatively easily through most solids and liquids and so if you time how long it takes to travel from one side to the other and back and you know the speed of sound in that material then you can find out the thickness. The speed of sound in a large range of material is available on our website. Our Touchstone 1 ultrasonic thickness gauge will measure the thickness of material from 2mm to 200mm, is easy to use and used universally in the marine industry.
The Touchstone 1 is a high performance, low cost, simple to use handheld thickness gauge and it is suitable for use in a variety of applications in NDT (non-destructive testing) and is capable of measuring most engineering materials including plastic, glass, copper, cast iron and aluminium as well as a wide range of steels. The Touchstone 1 wall thickness gauge is simple to calibrate and operate; and produces accurate and reproducible results. The Touchstone 1 is widely used in ultrasonic thickness testing in quality control during marine maintenance, manufacturing and as an inspection tool to measure remaining wall thickness of materials subject to erosion and corrosion.
If you need to measure the coating on a ferrous i.e. steel substrate, like the paint on a ship’s hull, then a simple way to do this is to use our Touchstone 2 coating gauge.
Coating thickness
The Touchstone 2 is simple to operate low cost coating thickness gauge using the electrical properties of the substrate material to determine the coating thickness up to 6mm. The TOUCHSTONE 2 sensor will measure a wide range of non-metallic coatings on steel substrates including; paint, plastic, glass etc.
